2019 EIGHTH GRADE AWARDS CEREMONY
Here is the general information about the Eighth Grade Awards Ceremony. Please carefully read the questions and answers below.
1. When is the ceremony? The last day of school--May 24--at 9:15am in the Buford Middle School gym. Parents will enter through the double-doors on the chorus/band hallway. Doors will open at 8:45am.
2. Does my child have to be at school on time that day? YES!! We will assume that any child who is not at school by 7:30am is not participating in the ceremony.
3. Who gets to participate? Every eighth grader will be eligible to participate in the awards ceremony.
4. Will every child be recognized in the ceremony? No. We will not be recognizing every student by giving out a promotion certificate this year. See the list of awards below to determine if your student will be recognized individually.
5. Do the students still get to dress up for the ceremony? Yes. The eighth grade teachers are discussing the award ceremony clothing guidelines with students in class, and typically students make an effort to look very nice for the event.
6. Are students able to leave with their parents after the ceremony? Yes. Students may check out and leave with their parents after the ceremony. The teachers will be set up outside the gym, and parents must sign out their student by seeing the homeroom teacher. If you want your student to leave with someone other than a parent, that person MUST be on the student's approved check-out list. Teachers will send home a form for parents to sign and indicate their child's plans for the day.
7. Is there a limit on how many people per child can attend the ceremony? While we don't actually give a number limit per child for this event, it is a standard end-of-the-year awards ceremony, not a graduation. We have limited seating, and typically, just parents/grandparents attend the ceremony.
8. Is there an 8th grade "walk" like they have at BES and BA? No. Students will "walk" into the gym as part of the ceremony, so there is not an official "walk" before that time. Parents should report directly to the gym that morning for the ceremony.
Awards--Opportunities for Individual Recognition:
1. SuperWolves (All A's for 6th-8th Grades)

3. A-Average for 8th Grade (Combination of A's and B's, no C's--Yearly average must be 89.5 or higher)
4. Perfect Attendance
5. Citizenship
6. Presidential Awards (Based on test scores and either All A's or A-Average)
7. Georgia Young Author--8th Grade Winner

Expectations/Guidelines for the Ceremony
Being promoted to high school is an important part of a student's school career; however, it's not the same thing as a graduation. This event is a standard awards ceremony, even though eighth graders have certain privileges that other grade levels do not.
Please be mindful of the guidelines for this ceremony:
Please be mindful of the guidelines for this ceremony:
- No balloons are permitted in the BMS gym. They block the view of other people, and if accidentally released, they cause issues for BMS faculty to retrieve them. Leave the balloons at home or in the car.
- While we encourage families to attend, small children typically get very bored sitting at a ceremony for approximately an hour and a half. If parents must bring small children, please remove them from the ceremony if they become distressed. Crying babies distract the audience from the focus of this program--our students.
- Audience members are encouraged to clap for our students at appropriate times; however, yelling and cheering individually again distracts the audience from the next child whose name is being called. Please be respectful of ALL students.
- Students are expected to be respectful of their classmates. Students should not talk during the ceremony nor should they yell for their friends at inappropriate times.
- Please do not leave the BMS campus until a parent has signed out the student from the first period teacher. Students are permitted to leave, but they MUST check out.
